Landmark Luxury Hotel Planned For South Shields
Plans have been unveiled for a new 104-bedroom luxury hotel and conference venue at the Gypsies Green site in South Shields on Tyneside. When complete it will boast the largest meeting facilities in the region with conference space for up to 1400 delegates, plus a spa and leisure club, restaurants and bars. An unusual feature of the £15million project will be its sloped, grassed roof, allowing the hotel to blend into the natural environment, making it unobtrusive from the Coast Road. The hotel is set to open its doors in summer 2009.

South Tyneside has excellent accessibility by air, rail, sea and car. Newcastle's international airport is just 15 miles away with a Metro rail service from within the terminal to South Shields. The A1 (M) and A19 (via the Tyne Tunnel) and A194 major trunk roads lead into South Tyneside.

Tavistock Leisure has won the contract to build the new hotel. The same company owns the Tavistock Roker Hotel in Sunderland and the Best Western Highfield Hotel in Middlesbrough. The is also in the middle of an ambitious revamp of The Grand Hotel in Hartlepool, where it plans to open a new restaurant and bar later this year.
